HOW TO SELECT

When purchasing hair extensions you want to get as close to your natural colour as possible and the best quality of hair you can.

When selecting the color, make sure you go shopping or to the salon during the day. Comparing hair color in the natural light is the only way to ensure you get the best possible match.

Ideally, always select real human hair extensions as they will last a lot longer and look a lot more natural. HOW TO WEAR

Next, section your hair into layers. Extensions are always clipped in to the bottom layer first, working up. Take these steps for each section:

Take a brush and gently backcomb the root sections of hair that you’ll clip the extensions into, finishing with a light misting of hairspray. By texurising the hair, you’re giving the extensions more to clip on to.
Next, clip in the extension in at a slightly uneven, slanted angle. If you clip them in totally straight, they won’t blend into the hair as naturally.
Once clipped in, brush your hair so that the extensions fall into your natural layers. Take a straightner and straighten the layer (check if stylers are compatible with your extensions), again, for blending purposes.

Once you’ve done each section of the hair, brush the full head and then either leave it straight or style as you naturally would using a tong or product (if you use synthetic hair, make sure they are heat-friendly). Comb your fingers through your hair and add some texturising product to the top roots for added volume.

HOW TO CARE

It’s not difficult to keep your hair extensions in good tack, but it does take care and maintenance. Here are the golden rules:

Always brush your extensions with a soft bristle brush and never brush them if they’re wet.
Wash your extensions no more than three times a week. You want to keep them clean so oil doesn’t make them slip but you don’t want to overload them with product.
Always use a sulfate free shampoo. Sulfate strips hair of natural oils, as there is no direct supply of nutrients from your scalp into the extension strands, it’s vital that you avoid drying the hair out.
Adding 2-3 drops of dry oil, such as coconut or almond, once a week will help to boost the shine of your extensions.

Make it messy.

DeCarlo explains that this look will work on a range of hair types from straight to curly, but retaining texture is important no matter the hairstyle. Second- or third-day hair, which has grittier hold, is actually ideal for this look.

To get that effortless vibe, use a curling iron to enhance texture and movement, advises DeCarlo. Tease select pieces on the crown to give overall fullness and make the hair look less haphazard. Follow your teasing with a dry texture spray and/or dry shampoo to remove any excess oil.

Think of your hair as a scarf.

This is an ideal look for fall not only because it requires that you wear a sweater, but also because you’re likely to need all the added layers you can get. In lieu of reaching for a scarf, think of your hair as a big bundle of warmth. Just be careful to avoid wrapping your hair too tightly around your neck—the faux-beard look isn’t what we’re going for here.

Dress appropriately.

Hair extensions are popular options for changing hairstyle or adding length and thickness to your hair. However, they are not like our own hair and they must be maintained. With hair extensions you have to do a little work if you would like them last.

Sometimes if you are new to hair extensions you may not be aware of the maintenance that is required for hair extensions. You certainly cannot leave them unattained or you will encounter problems such as tangling and matting. Even with the purest and most expensive hair on the market, you still have to go above and beyond to care for hair extensions. They simply don’t maintain themselves and if you do not use a care routine, they can tangle, mat, shed and dry becoming a mess quickly.

Instructions:

1. Brush out your extensions gently before washing. Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any tangles.

2 Shampoo your extensions. Slowly wet your hair while taking a shower. Use a mild shampoo and lather your hair in a downward motion.

3 . Wash your extensions with mild detergent. Gently place your hair in a tub filled with cool water and allow the extensions to soak for five to ten minutes. Rinse the extensions with cool water when finished. Allow your hair to air dry by placing on a mannequin head so it will dry in its natural shape. Do not brush your hair when it is wet.

4. Brush your extensions gently after washing. Using a soft-bristled brush or a wide-tooth comb, brush your hair two to three times a day to prevent tangles..

Spray the hair with a leave-in conditioner daily to help prevent tangles. You can also use a de-tangling product or silicon spray to help your hair extensions stay tangle-free.

Tie your hair extension up when sleeping or exercising to prevent tangles. When you swim, wear a swim cap to protect your hair from harsh chlorine.

Avoid heat, such as curling irons or hair dryers. Heat can be very damaging to certain synthetic hair pieces. Heat, in general, causes hair to tangle and creates split ends. Use heat sparingly on hair extensions.

Remy hair

The term “remy hair” refers to the hair that is cut, or harvested directly from one donor. The cuticles are not stripped and remain aligned in one direction. This hair could come from any country. A major source of remy hair is Asian countries. Remy hair has a smoother, shinier, and healthier appearance than regular human hair. When washed, it will not mat and tangle.

There is another term of virgin remy hair which is quite popular in hair industry. Virgin remy hair has not been chemically processed; this hair is raw and natural in other terms. Non-virgin remy hair underwent some sort of chemical processing in order to achieve another color.

There are two types of remy hair—Single-drawn and Double-drown. Single-drawn remy hair has been collected straight from the donor but is made up of different lengths, with the cuticles intact. Double-drawn remy hair is hair that has been sorted after collecting from the donor to ensure all the cuticles are of the same length. It is the most expensive type of remy hair because it takes meticulous time to sort the cuticles.

An individual who uses remy hair products will experience less matting and tangling than an individual who uses regular human hair products. Remy hair also gives a more natural appearance than regular human hair products.
