How To Stop Your Weave From Shedding:

Whether your hair is synthetic or straight human hair, weave shedding is a common problem. While fighting the shedding powers that be may seem pointless, there are ways to either minimize or completely stop the hair loss.

Seal The Hair

When most of us think sealing, we think about it in relation to moisturizing our hair, but this is a different kind of sealing specific to weaves. Using a sealant before installing your hair is crucial to prevent shedding. “Sealing” is the process of locking in the hair at the weft with a sealant–typically a liquid adhesive or glue. We all know buying hair is an investment, so sealing your hair is your own personal insurance plan.

Manipulate Less

The more styling you do, the more you’ll be pulling on your hair, the more your hair will be shedding. We know half the fun of rocking a weave is endlessly watching YouTube videos for style ideas from your favorite weave-slaying hair guru. Try limiting how many times you flat iron your hair by wrapping it at night, or wear your hair down more instead of putting it up in a ponytail.

Sew Around The Wefts

If you’re a stylist doing a sew-in , avoid sewing the needle straight through the track. This not only causes shedding, but it also decreases the life span of your wefts. The trick is to sew around the track so it doesn’t break down over time. That way, wefts and clients get their life!

How To Stop Your Weave tangling:

  1. 1. Fingercomb your strands BEFORE rinsing out the conditioner

This step is key to reducing tangles and knots because the running water (and conditioner) will help to lengthen the strands. Finger combing then helps to remove shed hair and any small tangles. (Don’t comb your hair extension from root to tip )Depending on the length and density of your hair, this process should not take long if your hair has been previously detangled.

  1. 2. Use gel to lock in the style (optional, but helpful)

Using gel is not so much for definition but for locking the strands in place so as to reduce tangling. (Keep in mind that some gels can leave a white cast on top of your hair)

  1. 3. Don’t manipulate your hair afterwards

Once you’re done washing, leave your strands alone. Don’t play in your hair. Don’t pull at your hair. Don’t rub your hair. Manipulation after rinsing and setting your hair will just lead to tangles and knots.

  1. 4. Don’t wear yourhairfor too long

How long you can wear your wash-n-go without heading into tangle city depends on how fine, long, and dense your hair is. (My maximum wear is around 3-5 days.) I suggest starting small and wearing your style for 1-2 days. Gradually stretch that period for the next few wash until you have a good idea of what your maximum wear is.
